A Brief History of Earth Day at University Park
Front pages from the Daily Collegian on April 22, 1970, show that Penn State’s first Earth Day celebration was overshadowed by continued student protests against university administration. Like many college campuses across the U.S., Penn State’s Earth Day celebration focused on pollution broadly, and included addresses from faculty, film viewings, and live performances, which garnered front page coverage on April 23. The day’s events also featured speeches from three candidates running for Governor of Pennsylvania.

David Long was a student at Penn State and member of Eco Action during the 1980s, when the environmental concerns of students had evolved to include recycling, radiation, and the greenhouse effect. In 1990, Earth Day became a globally-recognized celebration.
